SHANNON KOKKELER
Shannon Kokkeler of Stevens Point was born with an undeveloped right leg. Through casts and braces, the leg and foot developed correctly, but grew at a slower rate than her left.
In 1990, at ten years of age, the discrepancy was nearly three inches, forcing her to wear a hefty corrective lift. She was given the chance to destroy the growth plate in her left leg and hope the right leg would catch up…or try a new leg lengthening procedure. Shannon chose the lengthening procedure, as she wanted to be the height God wanted her to be.

The Illizarov Leg Lengthening procedure had been done routinely on the east and west coast, but had not been attempted in the Midwest. Dr. Stig Jacobsen, her orthopedic surgeon from Marshfield Clinic, studied with Dr. Illizarov in Europe prior to doing this procedure.
Today, Shannon’s legs are the same length and she has been able to lead a full and active life.
